The Medical Center of the Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (UKB) is represented through the Institute for Reconstructive Neurobiology (IRN, http://stemcells.uni-bonn.de) which is led by Prof. Dr. Oliver Brüstle. IRN researchers have been pioneering the use of human pluripotent stem cells and their differentiation into various neural stem and progenitor cell types in Germany. The institute has successfully implemented a number of stem cell-based disease models that is used to study pathogenesis of neurological diseases. In addition, the institute is working on methods to standardize and automate cell culture and reprogramming protocols.
